Buying pre-made food

I know that always cooking things from scratch is just not possible. Some pre-packaged items are actually the smarter choice to make cooking more convenient, without altering the nutritional value! Below are my tips for when I am buying pre-made food.

Read the labels and make smart food decisions
How do you navigate your way through the "good stuff" that makes our lives more convenient and the "bad" pre-made foods that are a nightmare for diabetics?

They say you can't judge a book by its cover ... And I would say that you can't trust a meal by its packaging. Some products that boast about their health benefits might be packed full of sugar... And something unsuspecting might actually be the better choice! To know for sure, taking an extra minute to read the nutritional information when making your purchasing decision can make a big difference!

Compromise and compliment
Try complimenting the pre-made part of your meal with something homemade too. For example, the dumplings seen in the picture are bought from a supermarket, pre-packed and found in the frozen food aisle. I’ve already ticked the first box of reading the label, making sure they are the best brand and not going to completely send my sugar levels into a freenzy! You’ll see the dumplings are complimented with a salad and dipping sauce which I made myself at home.

Don't make it a regular thing
It's far too easy to get into a routine of convenience in the fast-paced capitalist world, where food is increasingly pre-packaged, easy and ready to eat, NOW. With that, the art of cooking has been lost for so many people. Even when you make the "better" decision by reading the labels on the back, pre-packaged meals and products inevitably have preservatives and often article flavours so that they can create and produce a product that's profitable in the market.

Put simply, the cheaper they can make it, the more money the make - the goal of most food corporates. And to make it cheaper, the quality of the product is often put second to the dollar profit to be made.
If you catch yourself choosing pre-packaged too many times, it's important to notice that and adjust.
