Berry Protein Smoothie

I think what is important when you make a smoothie is not the fruit, but the protein and fibre you put into it. And, keeping the refined sugar OUT...Make sure to find a good protein powder and natural yogurt that does not use sugar. I have found a great organic pea protein powder that uses stevia and natural flavours. Also, by adding wholemeal oats to your smoothie, this adds much needed fibre - this is really important.

In the pictures I have used strawberries but I called this smoothie a "berry" one because you can use whatever berries you have, or prefer! Like I said, what is important for this smoothie is the extra protein and fibre! Normally I have this protein smoothie after doing strength training to help my muscles recover and build. Building muscle is a great thing for diabetics because when we use our muscles it helps burn the food we eat more
efficiently - meaning it helps control your sugar levels.

Ingredients

Serving: 1 person
  • 4 cubes of ice
  • 1 serving of protein powder (I have used a chocolate flavoured one in this smoothie, but a vanilla one would be nice too)
  • 1/2 a banana (ideally pre-frozen)
  • 1/4 cup wholemeal oats
  • 1/4 cup frozen berries
  • 1/4 cup low fat natural yogurt
  • 1/4 cup soy or almond milk

Special equipment needed:
  • Blender

How to

  • Place all the ingredients into your blender, and blend until it is all combined well.
  • Note: different blenders work better or not as well as others... If your blender is struggling to combine everything just add some cold water or a touch more of the milk to help it.
  • Enjoy!
